The making process of cold process soap

Cold process soap making is a fun and rewarding craft that allows you to create luxurious bars of soap using all-natural ingredients, including herbs from your own garden. In this blog post, I will outline the steps for making cold process soap infused with natural herbs.

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients and Supplies

To make cold process soap with natural herbs, you will need the following ingredients and supplies:

- Coconut oil
- Olive oil
- Shea butter
- Lye (sodium hydroxide)
- Water
- Essential oils or fragrance oils (optional)
- Dried herbs of your choice (such as lavender, rosemary, or calendula)
- Soap mold
- Safety goggles and gloves
- Stainless steel or heat-resistant plastic containers
- Stick blender
- Thermometer

Step 2: Infuse Your Oils with Herbs

Before you begin making your soap, you will need to infuse your oils with dried herbs. To do this, simply place the herbs in a heat-resistant container and cover them with the oils. Heat the mixture gently in a double boiler for a few hours, then strain out the herbs using a cheesecloth or fine mesh sieve.

Step 3: Prepare Your Lye Solution

In a well-ventilated area, carefully mix the lye with water in a stainless steel or heat-resistant plastic container. Make sure to wear safety goggles and gloves while handling the lye, as it is caustic. Allow the lye solution to cool to around 100 degrees Fahrenheit before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Mix Your Oils and Lye Solution

Once the oils and lye solution are at the correct temperatures, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils while stirring with a stick blender. Blend the mixture until it reaches trace, which is when the soap batter has thickened and leaves a trail on the surface.

Step 5: Add Essential Oils and Herbs

If desired, add essential oils or fragrance oils to scent your soap, and mix well with the stick blender. Then, gently fold in the dried herbs to create a beautiful swirl effect in your soap.

Step 6: Pour Your Soap into the Mold

Pour the soap batter into a soap mold of your choice, tapping it gently on the countertop to remove any air bubbles. Cover the mold with a towel or wax paper and let the soap cure for 24-48 hours.

Step 7: Cut and Cure Your Soap

After the soap has set, remove it from the mold and cut it into individual bars using a sharp knife. Place the bars on a drying rack or parchment paper and allow them to cure for 4-6 weeks before using.

And there you have it! By following these simple steps, you can create your own cold process soap infused with natural herbs. Not only will your skin thank you for using all-natural ingredients, but you will also enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the herbs in your soap. Happy soap making!
